Our dentists may recommend surgical TMJ treatment if more conservative therapies, such as oral appliances, physical therapy and muscle relaxants, are not effective in managing this condition. Surgical procedures are typically the last option considered, as they are more invasive and their results are permanent.

You may be a candidate for surgical TMJ treatment if:

• You feel consistent, intense pain or tenderness when moving your mouth.
• You cannot open or close your mouth all the way.
• You have trouble eating or drinking due to pain or immobility.
• Your pain and immobility continue to worsen, even with other treatments.
• You have structural problems or diseases in your jaw joint.

Our dentists will perform a thorough examination to determine if surgical treatment is right for you and will discuss your options with you in order to create a treatment plan. Some of the surgical options our dentists may discuss with you include:

• Arthrocentesis — This minimally invasive procedure involves the insertion of small needles into the joint. This allows fluid to irrigate the joint and remove debris and inflammatory byproducts.
• Injections — Injectable medication such as BOTOX® or corticosteroid may help to relieve discomfort and manage your TMJ to improve your jaw function.
• TMJ Arthroscopy — Arthroscopic surgery consists of a thin tube placed into the joint space, after which an arthroscope is inserted and small surgical instruments are used to perform your procedure. This type of surgery has fewer risks and complications than open-joint surgery does but is also slightly more limited.
• Modified Condylotomy — This procedure addresses the TMJ indirectly with surgery on the lower jaw but not in the joint itself. It is generally helpful in treating pain and locking of the jaw.
• Open-Joint Surgery — This procedure is recommended when the TMJ problem is caused by a structural issue, and it works by repairing or replacing the joint.
